Is Western a varsity program?
No. The team is increasingly being run as a varsity program with the addition of weight room times in the varsity strength center. We only receive partial funding from the University. Barely enough to cover our league registration fees. The team does not provide scholarships. Most of the teams funding comes straight from player dues and fundraising.
What is the league/conference Western is associated with?
Western currently plays in Division II of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). We are apart of the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League (PNCLL) and play teams such as Western Oregon, Puget Sound, Whitman, Pacific Lutheran, Willamette, U of Portland, Central Washington and Southern Oregon.
What facilities do you use?
The team has weight room times in the Parberry Strength and Conditioning Center and also has field times on the Wade King Turf. Athletes are encouraged to also use the Rec Center for additional lifting during the week that is not scheduled for lacrosse.
What does it cost to play?
The team survives off player dues which will range from $500-750 depending on the amount of travel in the season. We will let you know the official amount once the schedule is released. Dues will be due at the end of January and must be paid in full. No payment plans will be set up unless you are demonstrating extreme financial needs. From personal experience just set aside a few bucks here and there from your summer pay check and you will have the cash necessary for dues. You might also think that these dues are high but in comparision to other teams in our league we typically charge around the same and even less. Michigan and other big name programs will charge their players around $3000 to compete for the entire season.
There is also an additional due payment for fall which will be around $75. This covers the cost of refs and your travel for our fall ball road trip.
The player due payments will cover the cost of travel for the season and will also get a player practice pack which includes two Nike t-shirts, reversible and practice shorts. The cost also covers coaches fees and home reffing fees. We also ask that players be responsible for their own equipment. You MUST buy a pair of navy lacrosse gloves perferrably Brine. (We are trying to match even more). We also have about 5-6 team helmets which will be given to those individuals who can not meet the necessary financial situation. Helmets are CPX's with Navy(shell) Navy (visor) and White (chin). We usually will order more helmets in bulk around November and this can be very cost effective for those individuals who are planning on buying one. If you buy your helmet you will have it for 4 years.
Overall the first year is always the most expensive with purchasing new equipment but once you have it you need not buy anything more. Each player is also responsible for making $300 in fundraising money. We will hold fundraising events during the fall and early regular season which can help you acheive that goal.
How do I join the team? What do I have to do to be eligible to play?
We will be having our first team meeting of the year Thursday September 24 at 19:00 in the AIC Lecture Halls. We will provide more team information and practice will begin the following Monday. To get on the contact list please go to the contact tab and make sure to send us an email.
Under MCLA guidelines a student-athlete must be a full time student at their university with 12 credits nothing less. Failure to compete with 12 credits will result in either a forfeit of the game and further penalties from the team.
How much time should I commit to being on the team?
The fall ball season officially kicks off at the beginning of October and will continue until the end of November. Fall Ball practice will consist of three field practices and two mandatory weight room sessions. The regular season will be much of the same with practices running from January until Mid May with competitions at home and on the road on mulitple weekends. The team will also participate in a Spring Break trip usually to some place warm.
WWU has been one of the most successful club teams in the Northwest and we strive to make the club better year after year. If you fill like you can help us acheive our goals of winning a PNCLL title and a MCLA national championship you are going to help this team. Roll Big Blue!
